Lifting The Lid On Mental Health - Sept 2014

This pre-election event was organised by an alliance of community mental health peaks and organisations – headed by Tandem, VMIAC and VICSERV – aiming to present politicians with the key issues facing people living with mental illness, their families and their carers ('The Alliance').

The Alliance identified several key issues in the current mental health space:

(1) With no community mental health support funded outside of the NDIS, many consumers will fall through the gaps;
(2) The consumer workforce needs to be developed;
(3) The budget for carer programs must be extended;
(4) Better housing initiatives for people living with mental illness are needed; and
(5) Specialist mental health services must be better supported to assist vulnerable groups, such as women, Aboriginal and TSI, CALD and GLBTIQ persons.

 A summary of the Alliance's key messages is available here, and a Media Release for the event is available here.
